Amnesty International is a worldwide campaigning movement that works to promote all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards. Amnesty is a very well known and highly respected organization. The American Philanthropy Review sponsors the Charity Channel, which is an online community of nonprofit professionals You can go to Charity Channel for its reviews of nonprofit books, and for its career page, searchable by title, location or organization. Nonprofit organizations can also post current job openings.

Charity Village

The Career Centre allows a job seeker to easily browse or search its job database for positions in Canada. There is also the possibility of just looking at the most recently posted job listings, which is updated daily. The Career Centre also offers advice in creating a resume and developing a personal market strategy.

Children's Defense Fund

CDF educates the nation about the needs of children and encourages preventive investment before they get sick or into trouble, drop out of school, or suffer family breakdown. The site has a variety of jobs and internships listed. They also have a jobline number: 1-202-662-3680.

Civil Society International

The site offers a list of links to nongovernmental organizations with job openings all over the world, though they specialize in jobs in Central and Eastern Europe. A person can also search the Center's large archive of current international jobs, internships and volunteer positions. The Center for Civil Society also posts current conferences, exchange programs, grant opportunities, and partnership requests. This site is very useful for people looking for jobs overseas, especially in Asia and Eastern Europe.

ESR's mission is to make teaching social responsibility a core practice in education so that young people develop the convictions and skills needed to shape a safe, sustainable, democratic, and just world. ESR has a job opportunities section and supports a creative conflict resolution program that may need trainers/disseminators.

First Nations Development Institute

The Institute is a Native American nonprofit, the first non-federal program fully committed to culturally appropriate economic development in Indian Country. Their strategy coordinates local grass roots projects with national program and policy development to build the capacity for self-reliant reservation economies. The site offers research fellowships, internships, and employment opportunities that can be accessed by clicking on "Job Opportunities" at the bottom of their homepage.

The Fund for Public Interest Research

FFPIR is a national, nonprofit, grassroots organizing network that works with progressive organizations to solve some of the country's most pressing environmental, consumer, and government accountability problems. Their current campaigns are with the Sierra Club, Human Rights Campaign, the State PIRGs, and numerous other groups. They offer mainly salaried, managerial fundraising positions and also have conservation-related summer openings. You can apply on-line.

Global Exchange

Global Exchange is a not-for-profit education, research and action center committed to linking socially responsible people in the global community. Help them strive to increase US awareness of global issues such as fair trade through public education and campaigning. Global Youth Connect

GYC is an emerging international network working to support and encourage youth activism around human rights. The Executive Director wrote a letter stating that internships and other paid positions would be opening up as the organization grows.

Field School in Environmental Organizing

Each year 20 recent grads are hired for a one year, full-time paid Environmental Leadership Training Program launching their careers in environmental organizing and advocacy. More than 85% of their grads have held leadership positions in the foremost grassroots organizations. Green Corps seeks creative and adventurous people with sincere aspirations of saving the planet to participate in a hands-on classroom and campaign focused training experience. "Imagine directing a forest protection intiative or running a campaign to clean up toxic waste or starting your own non-profit environmental group." Green Corps' paid training program opens the doors to a lifetime of environmental careers.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. Homeowners and volunteers build the houses under trained supervision. These houses they build are sold at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage. The site has US and international jobs, paid and unpaid. InterAction

InterAction lists jobs and volunteer opportunities in the United States and abroad, concerning international relief and development. They also have a bi-weekly publication, "Monday Developments", that a person can subscribe to for $45 per year. The Idealist web page is a project of Action Without Borders. Action Without Borders' mission is to create "a global coalition of individuals and organization working to build a world where all people can live free, dignified and productive lives." Action Without Borders is a global coalition of individual and worldwide organizations and is independent of government, political ideology, or religious affiliation. The Nonprofit Career center site within the idealist web page allows people to search for jobs and internships anywhere in the United States or world. It is possible to browse all current job openings. One may also post their resume on the site. There is free e-mail list subscription available to receive daily updates on new listings of jobs and internships.

People for the American Way

PFAW organizes and mobilizes Americans to fight for fairness, justice, civil rights and the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution. The organization is a premier source of vital information for policymakers, scholars and activists nationwide. PFAW has numerous employment opportunities, mainly in their DC office, but also in field offices. Internships and volunteer positions are also available.

This site features job alert, an e-mail service that sends out updates on jobs in the non profit sector. Looking for some extra help with grant writing or fundraising? Population Action International

PAI advocates effective policy and programs to combat our ever expanding population in order to enhance the quality of life for all. PAI supports volunteer family planning, reproductive rights, health services, and educational and economic opportunity for girls and women. Job listings in diverse areas of interest are provided.

Public Campaign

Public Campaign is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to sweeping reform that aims to dramatically reduce the role of special interest money in America's elections and the influence of big contributors in American politics. They have a small jobs section on their site. There is no mention of internships.

Rainforest Action Network: San Francisco

The Rainforest Action Network is geared at protecting the earth's rainforests and its inhabitants. The network was born after an unsuccessful campaign to boycott Burger King in 1985. Ever since, RAN has worked to bridge activists in indigenous countries with socially responsible citizens here in the United States. In addition, RAN is concerned with free trade and consumer conscience in America. Job openings, intern and volunteer opportunities are accessed by linking to the headings titled, 'About RAN' and 'What You Can Do' which leads to the link 'Work At Ran'. Updated job openings are provided at this site. An unpaid internship is also available at RAN headquarters in SF. The internship requires 12 hours a week and compensates transportation costs.

Refugees International

RI was founded in 1979 in response to the outpour of Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees. RI is a DC based advocacy organization attempting to represent the underrepresented, the refugee. Sierra Club

Born and inspired in 1892 by John Muir, the Sierra Club is one of the countries largest conservation organizations. They are currently grappling with fair trade, land and ocean conservation, and restoration and efforts to educate the masses. This site offers information on an assortment of opportunities, ranging from magazine interns to chapter director. On the first page of this site, listed under the heading 'about Sierra Club', you can find 'jobs at Sierra Club'. This link lists over 25 jobs in diverse fields and areas around the country. Many of the positions available are located in DC and SF, but Sierra's regional chapters also follow through with their own recruitment. This link also provides information about internships available in DC and SF, which are compensated with a $200/wk allowance.

SIPAZ

SIPAZ, The International Service for Peace, consists of a coalition of organizations from Latin America, North America and Europe. SIPAZ was initiated by various Mexican human rights groups and church organizations to support the peace process in Chiapas. The organization has an active commitment to nonviolence. Sometimes SIPAZ posts their job openings on the web site, however, the easiest method of contacting them is through the address, telephone number, or e-mail address listed below. International Affairs majors, especially those with a focus in Latin America, may find SIPAZ helpful in their career search, since SIPAZ frequently needs translators and other internationally focused people.

Southern Poverty Law Center

The Center began as a small civil rights law firm in 1971. Now it is internationally known for its tolerance education program, its legal victories against white supremacist groups, its tracking of hate groups and its sponsorship of the Civil Rights Memorial. Their site lists employment opportunities.

United for a Fair Economy

UFE was founded as a "movement support" organization to provide media capacity, face-to-face economic literacy education, and training resources to organizations and individuals who work to address the widening income and asset gap in our country. The have a small jobs section on their site.

USPIRG & State PIRGs

The PIRG's primarily focus on natural resource protection, the struggle for a healthy environment, consumer rights and government accountability. US and state PIRG's continuously offer paid opportunities with a social conscience. This link is amazingly comprehensive, mostly because the PIRG job opportunities are too. Jobs and internships for students, recent grads and those with advanced degrees are readily available.

Witness for Peace

This organization works mainly in Nicaragua, Guatamala, and other target countries for Reagan's "low intensity warfare." Witness for Peace organizes itself around issues of World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) structural adjustment programs, labor rights, corporate accountability, debt relief, US government relations with Latin American militaries, declassification of human rights and related documents, and more. They work closely with a number of other organizations and coalitions, including Jubilee 2000, the Quixote Center and the Latin American Working Group. They sponsor small delegations that go to Central America, Haiti, Chiapas, and Cuba to "see the human face of US policy." For those interested in designing educational programs, journalism, and travel, Witness offers a variety of volunteer opportunities.

World Learning

World Learning's educational and training programs enable participants--individuals and institutions--to develop the leadership capabilities and cross-cultural competence required to advance international understanding, work effectively in multicultural environments, and achieve sustainable development at the community level or on a national scale. The World Learning / School for International Training, is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. World Wildlife Federation: International Focus

The WWF is the world's largest conservation organization aimed at providing a living planet to future generations. For 38 years, the WWF has worked to protect wildlands, wildlife, endangered species and spaces. The WWF's projects range from the establishment of urban parks to the protection of exotic animals.
