This list of approved courses gives students the freedom to structure their PACS program of study in ways that focus on aspects of the field that best address their interests and career plans. To do this most effectively, students are urged to work closely with their advisors to select courses that complement and reinforce one another. Departments offer new and special topics courses each semester, so please check with the PACS Director if you wish to include courses that are not listed here.

Following is a proposed revision of courses currently listed as options for completion of the certificate’s in-major and outside-major credit hour requirements. The existing list had not been reviewed in over a decade, and several of its entries had been discontinued or modified by offering units. This list subsequently reflects updated information for continuing listings, and adds new listings. Those new listings reflect the program’s recent addition of a security focus, accommodate interim development of new units and courses, and maximize the potential for certificate enrollment by students from various CU majors. They also reflect interim shifts in the contemporary landscape of social, political, and economic conflicts (e.g., growing prominence of climate change).

  1. All courses have been selected from CU Boulder 2016-17 Catalog listings.
  2. Courses were selected based on sufficient, plausible connection demonstrated in titles and descriptions to significant topics in peace, conflict, and security studies (e.g., war, immigration, crime, political activism, etc.).
  3. All courses listed are 3-credit offerings unless otherwise noted by the designation “(#)” following the course title.
  4. Listings for RAPS scheduled for closure in Fall 2017 are not included.
  5. Listings are presented in two formats:
    1. Alphabetical, by Department or Program Acronym. This format is intended to provide students with convenient reference for locating approved courses offered within their major (i.e., to satisfy related certificate requirements). Advising experience indicates that this is the predominant search mode used by certificate students.
    2. By major theme or topic related to peace, conflict, and security studies (see below). This format is intended to help PACS students combine courses inside and outside their majors to develop a coherent, focused experience, oriented to their choice of specific sources, sites, and modes of conflict. Each category includes a list of related topics in order to stimulate this development. Inclusion of courses in these categories is intended to be illustrative, not exhaustive. Categories reflect both documented and anticipated student interests. In some cases, courses have been included in more than one category. See below for categories.
